The six harmonies are an ancient principle in Tai Chi that refers to the coordination of the body and mind. The six harmonies are made up of three internal harmonies and three external harmonies:
External harmonies
The coordination of the body's movements, including the shoulders with the hips, the elbows with the knees, and the hands with the feet. These harmonies can improve movement in everyday life and recreational sports.
Internal harmonies
The coordination of the mind and body, including the spirit or consciousness with the mind, the mind with energy, and the energy with the body.
The six harmonies are said to result in smooth and continuous movements, good energy flow, and good structure in stance. They are also said to be effective in martial arts, as well as for bringing the benefits of Tai Chi.
The six harmonies are also a term used in other Chinese martial arts, such as Shaolin, Xing Yi Quan, Bagua, and Mantis.
